GIS Day

Each November, MSU Billings hosts GIS Day, a campuswide celebration of mapping and geospatial technology that brings together professionals, alumni, students, and community members. Recent programs have featured talks from federal, city, county, and private sector GIS professionals; student research presentations on topics such as Yellowstone River water quality; a moderated panel discussion; and an afternoon mapathon where participants contribute to real world mapping projects.
Beginning in 2026, GIS Day will also include the inaugural Geospatial Jeopardy competition before the mapathon, where teams face off for a championship trophy, recognition as the reigning champions, and a celebratory gift card for a local dinner. GIS Day gives students direct access to prospective employers and mentors while showcasing the breadth of careers that use GIS and applied geography鈥攆rom wildfire management and city planning to engineering and environmental consulting. Information about the upcoming GIS Day schedule, speakers, Geospatial Jeopardy, and mapathon will be updated here each year.
