Verification is a process required by the U.S. Department of Education to confirm the accuracy of information submitted on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Selected applicants must provide additional documentation before federal financial aid eligibility can be determined.

Students are selected for verification either by the U.S. Department of Education or by the Financial Aid Office to resolve conflicting or unusual information.

If you are selected:

  • You will be notified through your student portal and/or email.
  • You will be provided with a list of required documents and instructions for submission.
  • Verification must be completed before most types of financial aid can be awarded or disbursed.

If selected for verification, you are responsible for:

  • Submitting all requested documents accurately and completely.
  • Responding promptly to all requests for additional information.
  • Monitoring your student portal and email for updates.
  • Completing verification by the published deadlines.

Failure to complete required actions may delay or prevent the awarding or disbursement of your financial aid.

Documentation requirements vary by student and may include:

  • Verification forms (income, household size, etc.)
  • Federal tax information or IRS tax return transcripts
  • W-2 forms or proof of income
  • Identity and Statement of Educational Purpose
  • Additional documentation to resolve conflicting information

You must submit all requested documentation by:

  • 120 days after your last date of enrollment, or
  • The federal verification deadline for the award year,
    whichever occurs first.

If you fail to provide required documentation within the specified timeframe:

  • You will not be awarded federal financial aid for that academic year.
  • Any pending aid offer may be canceled.
  • You may lose eligibility for certain types of limited funding (such as campus-based aid or institutional aid).

If verification results in changes to your FAFSA data:

  • Your Expected Family Contribution (EFC), or Student Aid Index (SAI), will be recalculated.
  • Your financial aid eligibility and award amounts may change.

You will be notified of these changes through:

  • An updated financial aid offer/award notification
  • Messages in your student portal
  • A corrected FAFSA Submission Summary (or Student Aid Report) sent by the U.S. Department of Education

If errors or discrepancies are found during verification:

  • The Financial Aid Office will submit corrections electronically to the U.S. Department of Education.
  • In some cases, you may be required to provide additional documentation before corrections can be made.
  • Once corrections are processed, your eligibility will be reviewed and your aid offer updated as needed.

Verification must be completed before:

  • Most federal financial aid can be awarded or disbursed
  • Conflicting information is resolved

If you delay completing verification:

  • Aid processing will be delayed
  • Some funding may no longer be available

If verification is not completed:

  • Federal financial aid will not be awarded
  • Existing aid offers may be canceled
  • Disbursements may stop until requirements are met

If the Financial Aid Office identifies suspected fraud, falsification of documents, or intentional misrepresentation of information:

  • The case will be reviewed and documented.
  • The institution is required to refer credible evidence to the U.S. Department of Education Office of Inspector General.
  • Financial aid processing may be suspended pending review.

Additional Information

  • Verification may require multiple steps and follow-up requests.
  • You may be asked to use a secure third-party verification portal to submit documents.
  • The Financial Aid Office may request additional documentation at any time to resolve discrepancies.
